Opel’s versatile and highly successful van in the light commercial vehicle segment, the Movano, is now even more fuel efficient, safer and more comfortable thanks to several enhancements to its engines and on-board infotainment systems. The majority of commercial vehicle customers who spend their working day with their vehicle can now benefit from a Movano that is even better equipped to function like a mobile office. Fuel consumption is lower than ever, a key factor for business owners and others for whom operating costs are particularly important. The latest affirmation of the practical mix of multifunctional utility, dynamic qualities and exemplary economy: in the German Commercial Vehicle Prize 2012, the Movano made it onto the winners’ podium.

Flexible platform with front and rear-wheel drive

The Opel Movano provides the widest range of body variants – 188 in total – on the light commercial vehicle market, offering a model for virtually every customer-specific utility profile. Thanks to its highly flexible platform construction, the latest model generation offers a choice of front or rear-wheel drive, as well as gross vehicle weights of up to 4.5 tons. The rear-wheel drive, 3.5 ton variants are available with single or dual rear wheels, while dual rear wheels are standard with the 4.5-ton variants. The range includes panel vans (available in four vehicle lengths and three roof heights), combi versions, chassis and crew cabs as well as platform cab versions. Vehicles are also flexibly equipped for special conversions or enhancements and some special versions – like dropside, tipper, box body or bus – are available ex-works.

Best values in load area dimensions and cargo capacity

The cargo areas of the panel van variants offer best-in-class accessibility, loading ease, standing height and cargo capacity. The vehicle can accommodate up to 17 cubic meters with a maximum load area length of more than 4 meters, gross vehicle weight extends up to 4.5 tons, and maximum payload is up to 2.5 tons, depending on body variant. TheMovano is also an excellent candidate as a towing vehicle, able to tow up to 3.5 tons. The maximum gross train weight is 7.5 tons.

Alongside capacity and dimensions, ergonomics and functionality play a vital role in the world of heavy vans. The new Opel Movano is supremely practical for everyday use. The low loading sill height in the front-wheel drive models allows easy access to the cargo area, while sliding side and rear wing doors with generous apertures offer maximum loading and unloading convenience. Rear doors have a standard opening angle of 180 degrees, while the 270 degree version is optional.

The standard sliding side load door offers a maximum width of up to 1,270 mm (1,050 mm on L1 versions) and a maximum height of 1,780 mm, enabling euro pallets to be loaded and unloaded sideways. The wide rear-door aperture of 1,580 mm and height of 1,820 mm along with increased load-through width between wheel arches of 1,380 mm make loading easy, while straight body sides ensure efficient use of space.

Chassis and crew cab variants with three different lengths

The chassis and crew cabs in the 3.5 t and 4.5 t gross vehicle weight categories are available in three vehicle lengths (L2 / L3 / L4) and, depending on the version, can be ordered with front or rear-wheel drive as well as single or dual wheels at the rear.

The chassis variants, of course, offer just as much space as the panel van, as well as the unique ergonomic concept in the cab. Another special feature: in addition to the three front seats, the rear bench seat of the crew cab accommodates up to four additional passengers, each protected by head restraints and safety belts. All Movano RWD/DRW chassis/crew cab variants are now able to tow up to 3.5t. This demonstrates that the Movano is well equipped as a towing vehicle.

The Movano platform chassis variants are available in three lengths and two roof heights. The cab-to-body interface panel has been optimized for ease of integration and an extended-length wiring loom for the rear lights can be specified. In addition, extended electrical interfaces are also available ex-works to simplify the integration of the body in the vehicle’s electric system, thus facilitating the construction of tailor-made vehicles.

Special versions ex-works: Tipper, dropside and box body variants

The new Opel Movano can also be ordered ex-works as a rear or three-way tipper. These special versions are available in the length variants L2 and L3 with single or crew cab and in the weight classes 3.5 tons (front-wheel drive) as well as 3.5 or 4.5 tons (rear-wheel drive). Payload for these versions extends up to 1,860 kg. Standard equipment includes a steel load floor with integrated load securing points, cab protection with ladder holders as well as aluminum side and tail board with underride protection. The extensive special equipment program also offers steel side and tail boards and a rear ladder rack.

The dropside models are also available in the 3.5 and 4.5 ton gross vehicle weight categories and with front and rear-wheel drive, while the single and crew cab versions come in three lengths (L2 / L3 / L4). Depending on the variant, the 2.04-meter wide load floors are available in four lengths ranging up to 4.47 meters, with payloads varying from 889 to 1,884kg. Standard features include aluminum side and tail boards, cabin protection with ladder holder and a resin-coated wooden load floor.

The box bodies have a stable yet lightweight aluminum frame and synthetic panels give the vehicle a high-quality look and finish. Two box sizes are available with 20 and 22 m3 load volume that can carry payloads between 868 and 1,212 kg depending on the base chassis variant. Standard equipment includes a double-wing rear door with 270 degree opening angle, anti-skid floor covering and aluminum lashing rails around the interior.

Efficient CDTI engines: Modifications reduce consumption and CO2 emissions

State-of-the-art four-cylinder common-rail diesel engines (2.3 CDTI) provide low fuel consumption and emissions while delivering powerful torque. The engines are available in three output levels with 74 kW/100 hp, 92 kW/125 hp and 107 kW/146 hp. With an optional 105-liter tank (standard: 80 liters), the operating range is nearly 1,400 kilometers.

A series of improvements has been made to the engines with 74 kW/100 hp and 92 kW/125 hp. Every Movano now benefits from enhancements to the oil and steering pumps as well as to the engine electronics. Combined with low rolling resistance tires this leads to a significant reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. For example, in the 100 or 125 hp front-wheel drive Movano with the panel van body (5,048 mm length, 2,496 mm height), consumption and emissions have been reduced compared to the predecessor model by nine percent to 7.8 liters of diesel per 100 km and 205 g/km CO2. Engineers also achieved similar improvements in the equally powerful nine-seat passenger version (5,048 mm length, 2,307 mm height), reducing consumption and CO2 emissions by seven percent to 7.2 l/100 km and 190 g/km. Significant attention has been paid to ensuring that low fuel consumption is also achieved in real world operating conditions, and not just in the combined EU cycle.

All variants come with six-speed manual transmission as standard. Automated Easytronic transmission, which combines high efficiency with the handling comfort of an automatic, is optionally available for the two more powerful output versions. All three engines are equipped with a diesel particulate filter and meet Euro 5 emissions standards.

Excellent economy thanks to low operating costs

The second-generation Opel Movano also sets standards in terms of economy. A cornerstone for this is excellent manufacturing and product quality, resulting in high reliability and long service life.

The Movano also delivers in terms of low operating costs, especially for spare and wear-and-tear parts. The brake and clutch components are particularly durable. Maintenance costs are also much lower: an oil change is only required every 40,000 kilometers, or once a year, and the coolant only needs to be changed after 160,000 kilometers. The Movano has been engineered for exemplary durability and above-average mileage performance.

Refined driving characteristics – high safety reserves

In keeping with the progressive drive concept, the Opel Movano’s advanced chassis is tuned for agile handling and comfortable suspension while fully loaded and when empty. This is accompanied by a high level of safety: ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) are provided as standard in all models. The electronic stability program ESP is also standard in all rear-wheel drive models, and is available as an option with front-wheel drive versions. In addition, rear-wheel drive Movano variants can also be ordered with limited-slip differential as an option. The system reduces the slip at the wheel with the least traction on the road, allowing the rear-wheel drive to work even more effectively.

Passive safety features include a driver airbag as standard, as well as three-point safety belts with belt tensioner and belt force limiter. Further elements such as passenger airbag, seat-integrated side airbags or headlamps with cornering light can be ordered as extras.

Maximum infotainment comfort

In a big boost to comfort and safety in the Movano cabin, all new infotainment systems (R15 BT, CD 15 BT and CD 35 BT) have Bluetooth connectivity, allowing the driver to use his mobile phone safely. An mp3 player can also be plugged in to the standard Aux-in or USB socket on all infotainment systems. Two mp3-capable stereo CD-radios can be effortlessly operated by a multi-function steering wheel. The CD15 BT has a user-friendly, display located in the center of the CD/radio unit, enabling the driver to comfortably navigate through various infotainment menus using rotary knobs and buttons. The top-of-the-range CD 35 BT unit has an external display in the driver’s field of vision – an important factor with regard to safety. A TomTom navigation system with SD card-based maps is optionally available for this unit.
